Breastfeeding

Breast is best – benefits of breastfeeding

As a mother one of the best things that only you can do for your baby is to breastfeed. This will give your baby the best start in life. We want to support women in their decision to breastfeed and help them continue to do so. The Solihull breastfeeding service is available for mums to offer support and advice to complement the service offered by midwives and health visitors.

Following the latest World Health Organisation guidance, the Department of Health has issued a new recommendation to support women breastfeeding, as part of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week.

The new recommendation states that: "Breastfeeding is the best form of nutrition for infants." Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of life as it provides the best start for babies. Breastfeeding gives your baby all the nutrients needed and gives protection from infection and other diseases. It also reduces your chances of getting some illnesses later in life. Breastfeeding helps you and your baby get closer physically and emotionally. While your child is feeding the bond between you can grow stronger.

We aim to provide a high standard of care so that pregnant women and new mothers get the support they need to breastfeed successfully. Solihull Hospital, health clinics and GP surgeries are improving their services and the Care Trust received the UNICEF Baby Friendly Certificate of Commitment in May 2009. Remember, breastfeeding is a very special, unique and enjoyable experience. With practice and support during the first few days you will succeed.
