Using a Dummy
Should I give my child a dummy? What effects might it have on his/her speech?
Dummies may be introduced by parents to calm a baby or reduce stress.
However there is evidence that long term and continuous use of dummies can, result in a gap developing between the upper and lower front teeth in children's primary teeth (first teeth) or encourage an immature forward tongue position because of the sucking action on the dummy. Both of these may affect the clarity of a child's speech.
If your child cannot manage without a dummy try to use it only when s/he is falling asleep. Do not allow your child to speak with a dummy in his/her mouth as this will prevent the learning of the correct tongue movement during speech.
